Disparities in Hand Surgery Thursday, September 26 Thu, Sep 26 5:00-6:00 p.m. PDT
The overarching goal of this session is to help attendees understand the importance of disparities in hand surgery and the impact on patient care. Attendees will learn about previous, current, and ongoing work in this emerging field. Our experts will 1) highlight the differences between disparity and inequity, 2) discuss the impact of systemic racism and perceived discrimination as contributors to ongoing disparities and 3) move from definition of the problem to actionable strategies that can be used to improve access and provide equitable hand surgery care. Participants will leave with a foundation in concepts and tools critical to tackling disparities and be empowered to enact change in their respective communities.
At the end of this activity participants will be able to:
- Define Existing Disparities in Hand Surgery and Opportunities for Patient Engagement
- Recognition and Mitigation of SDOH on Hand Surgery Outcomes
- Identify Strategies to Overcome Patient Mistrust in Hand Surgery
- Identify Approaches to Increase Hand Surgery Access Among the Underserved
